art in the form of wedding invitations

My super talented friend, Chaz Daum offered to "do" our wedding invites when I called her the night Jesse proposed. I thought "do" meant design them (she's a graphic design major), and I was so EXCITED! How many people get to have custom designed wedding invitations?! Somehow "do" became design and hand letterpress FOUR HUNDRED wedding invitations and I became even more excited. If you don't know what letterpress is, then I suggest not learning because ALL other forms of printing will be eternally ruined. And if you thought Kinko's was expensive... during the process I got curious as to how much it would cost to have wedding invites custom designed and then letter-pressed if Chaz wasn't donating her time and super awesome talent. I I got a few quotes from a couple of companies and the average quote was for a FEW THOUSAND DOLLARS! I had NEVER in my life known that invitations could even cost that much! Alas, beautiful art never was cheap.
Here's the thing about letterpress: it's basically a really large, heavy, machine that stamps the ink on to the paper (that creates the most beautiful indentation where it's inked. yay for texture!) which means:
-each invite has to be individually stamped by hand,
-for a two-color invitation you have to press the first color, let it dry and then ink the second color, and
-the stamp has to be re-inked by hand about every 12 invites.
BASICALLY...it's sooo much work (hence the price tag)! But Chaz is just suuuuuuch an awesome friend, she did all that insane work (times 400 plus 300 envelopes), so, that I could have the most beautiful invites in the world.
When I got them, my heart fluttered with excitement at how beautiful they are! Honestly, I didn't even want to send them out! I just wanted to look at them and keep them for myself.
I absolutely LOVE Jesse's and my wedding invitation and I'm very, very grateful to have such an amazing friend that was willing to do this for me. THANK YOU, CHAZ DAUM! I LOVE YOU!
